Dragonite Ore (and Bloodstone Dust and Empyreal Fragments) are used for Ascended crafting. You need 500 of each to make an Ascended weapon, and 200500 of each to make a piece of Ascended armour (depending on the piece). If you are levelling your crafting skills and envision yourself getting Ascended gear, save some for that time.
It only takes a scavenger hunt achievement in Lion's Arch and eats up to 200ish dragonite ore per day in exchange for various blue/green gear and junk items. You can get to 425 just by buying orichalcum ore/gossamer scraps and selling the orichalcum ingots/gossamer bolts. 425450 is a bit harder but with a crafting booster you won't have to spend more than a few gold and some t6 fine materials. Most of the time you'll get back minor loot, but they can occasionally surprise you with nice stuff.
